What is the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program?
Short answer: a temporary Medicare demonstration that lets eligible people with Medicare drug coverage get certain GLP-1 weight-loss medications — Wegovy, Zepbound (KwikPen), or Foundayo — for a flat $50 per month, from July 1, 2026 through December 31, 2027.

How it works
- It sits outside your regular drug plan. The program runs nationally through a central processor (administered by Humana). Your Part D plan doesn’t have to opt in, and you don’t switch plans to use it.
- The price is a flat $50/month. No deductible applies. But because the program sits outside Part D, the $50 does not count toward your annual out-of-pocket cap, and Extra Help (the Low-Income Subsidy) does not reduce it.
- Your doctor applies for you. Access requires a provider-submitted prior authorization confirming you meet the BMI and health criteria — see who qualifies or take the 2-minute eligibility check.
- Only three products are covered. Wegovy, Zepbound in the KwikPen only (vials and single-dose pens are excluded), and Foundayo.
Why it exists — and why it's temporary
Medicare has historically been barred from covering drugs for weight loss alone. CMS designed a broader experiment (the BALANCE Model) to test coverage through Part D plans, but its Medicare component was postponed when too few plans signed up. The Bridge is the stopgap: a direct federal demonstration that skips the plans entirely. It was originally announced as a six-month program and extended through December 2027 — but as of today there is no announced path for coverage after 2027. If you may qualify, waiting has a real cost.
The fine print that surprises people
- People with type 2 diabetes, moderate-to-severe sleep apnea, or MASH are covered through standard Part D instead — a different path with different (often better) cost rules.
- The Zepbound KwikPen-only rule catches many people at the pharmacy counter.
- Extra Help recipients pay the same $50 as everyone else.
